Lighting design: principles and applications

Lighting technology is a technical-scientific discipline focused on the study and implementation of lighting solutions. This term refers to "the tools and techniques relating to the rational use of various light sources" both in the architecture and design of civil environments and for the development of lighting components for devices that can be integrated into various applications.

In this article, we will focus on lighting design, whose specific purpose lies in the conception and realisation of lighting solutions for residential installations.

Design principles and steps

The design process for a lighting solution begins with an analysis of the customer's requirements. The preliminary meeting defines the fundamental technical aspects, which will be followed by feasibility studies to select the best solution.
The parameters to be established at the start of a project are those relating to the type of light required and the end product into which the light fitting is to be incorporated. At this stage, the function of the light as a component of a more complex application is defined. It can be a signalling, emergency or aesthetic lighting function. The next step is to consider the position of the light in order to determine its measurements and overall dimensions.

The next step is to choose the colour, hue and colour temperature of the light. These analyses help to define the most appropriate light source. Once chosen, other technical parameters, which are not secondary, will be established, such as the operating voltage, the type of power supply, the maximum temperature and the heat dissipation mode for the light source.

Lighting design requires interdisciplinary skills related primarily to light propagation, but also to electronics and plant engineering. There is no doubt that many technical skills are needed to work successfully in this field, but creative input is also required.

In this process, the Research and Development laboratory plays a fundamental role, where the uses of the latest generations of LEDs and fibre optics for lighting are studied and explored in order to offer original lighting solutions.

Lighting design: some examples for installation

Lighting design revolves around technical-functional parameters and the search for an attractive design that meets the requirements. For us at SLIM, the design of a customised lighting solution is achieved in partnership with the customer: the many different requirements are identified and specific aesthetic features are defined, sometimes within innovative shapes.

Below are a few success stories as examples of lighting solutions for civil installations.

Hager Gallery series of switches and plates

One of our collaborations with the Hager Group was the creation of the Hager Gallery series of switches and plates. We participated in this creation by developing a special backlighting system. A very thin LED light band was created to frame and enhance the plate. A simple detail that contributed to Hager receiving the prestigious Janus Award from the French Institute of Design.

Allure and Finesse series of electrical sockets and switches from Hager Australia

We worked with Hager Australia to restyle the classic switch for Australian residential installation. In this case, a customised indicator light was created that is perfectly integrated into the plate. A distinctive light point with an aesthetic function, which earned Hager the Good Design Award Winner 2021.

Bticino's Living Now line of natively connected plates

Together with Bticino, we worked on developing the backlighting of the inverters of the new Living Now range of plates. An elegant thread of light was designed, which became the hallmark of the range. The result lived up to expectations and was particularly appreciated both in the Italian market and abroad.
