Testing activities: what they are and what they consist of

Testing comprises a set of tests, measurements and inspections: activities aimed at verifying the conformity, functionality and aesthetics of the product in its entirety. The testing system is one of the essential steps in defining the quality of what is produced. For us at SLIM, quality means always ensuring product repeatability to a high standard. It is essential to maintain a consistency of quality in every component and this high standard can be achieved through strict control of all stages of production stages. With this in mind, procedures, parameters and the entire production system have been continuously refined for almost 50 years.

In this article, we shed light on the testing activities concerning our light indicators.

Specifically, we talk about:

What is testing: a definition

The term testing refers to a series of specific operations that are carried out in order to verify the structural characteristics of a product and test its correct functioning, before it is intended for final use. Testing is an activity of quality control which is based on one or more tests followed by careful evaluation to determine the conformity and safety of a given component, system or product. Testing operations, therefore, differ depending on the object to be validated and aim to certify the functional and performance requirements specified and requested by the customer.

The industrial testing of SLIM for light signals

The testing activity verifies that at the end of the production and assembly process the light indicator or light-signalling solution has all the characteristics as per the initial design. The testing system includes a preliminary phase of examination of the technical documentation to establish the type of tests and inspections to which the different components are to be subjected. For testing activities, we at SLIM use a test report for light signals, which outlines the types of tests to be performed and the relevant parameters to be tested. The testing procedure we follow complies with quality protocols ISO 9001:2015 for which we are certified.
We have two macro-types of control: a functional test and an aesthetic test, each conducted according to precise steps. The functional test includes the verification of electrical continuity, i.e. the control when the light indicator is switched on, and consequently of the absorption and intensity of the light visually. The aesthetic test, on the other hand, consists of ascertaining that the lenses and holders are not damaged, scratched or peeling and that the marking on the holder is clearly visible to highlight the technical characteristics (voltage, operating voltage and temperature, certifying bodies).

100% SLIM testing: an exclusive service

100% testing is a service designed to offer the customer verification of certain characteristics. It is performed on 100% of the parts that are manufactured, resulting in an ignition control for the entire batch produced. The added value of this test is that it provides fully compliant and fully functional components. After testing, those who request it are provided with the test report: a certificate of testing to attest the proven quality of the delivered product. Should the customer require specific analyses, such as cable traction, we at SLIM carry out ad hoc tests and checks as required. In special cases, we also make use of the collaboration of external laboratories, experts in the field, in order to validate specific customer requirements (e.g. testing of the chemical composition of plastic components). This allows us to offer comprehensive and customised reports, which are more detailed on the basis of the additional parameters the customer needs. As part of the non-standard testing procedures required, we also carry out packaging and labelling according to the customer's guidelines and supplied material. Unlike standard light indicators, for some of our customised products, such as fibre optics and spotlights, additional colour and light intensity controls are possible.
